Conference Calls

The Sports Broadcasting Act, NFL Antitrust Exemptions, and Sports Streaming with Katie Van Dyck

May 26, 2026

On May 26, The Capitol Forum hosted Katie Van Dyck, Senior Legal Fellow at the American Economic Liberties Project, for a conference call discussing her recent article, “How an Obscure Law Lets Sports Leagues Rob Fans Blind.”

The conversation examined the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 and how a narrow antitrust exemption originally designed for free over-the-air broadcasts became a key pillar of today’s fragmented and increasingly expensive sports media landscape. Van Dyck explored the legal, economic, and policy implications of sports broadcasting rights, the rise of streaming platforms, and growing antitrust scrutiny of professional sports leagues.
